Coal wings
A short story

For Fish (happy birthday)
Kayara silent on all four huge black paws stalked her way threw the thick underbrush of lush green plants. She felt invincible, daring Akam to attack her. Rearing on her back legs her muscles rippling under the sleek black fur she slashed a blaze on the trunk of a large tree with her sharpened claws. Slicing into the bark like if was the soft petals of the wild roses. A voice came from behind ruining her good mood.
“Kayara we must rest!” Isis implored her voice as always a soft whisper, like the gentle pit pat of rain in the jungle. “The little ones are tired.” The soft voice chilled showing more signs of the rain like mystery it belonged to. Kayara glancing behind her flicked her slender tail out of annoyance as the little panther cubs stumbled sleepily and bumping into the bigger panther that the voice belonged to.
Tup-Tin, Athena and Amneris nodded. The long journeys had been hard for the little black panthers. Running from the demonic soldiers that Akam him self ordered to stalk out and capture the three little panthers, had tired them after only one day. Kayara sauntered up to Isis, although Kayara was a huge panther for a female Isis still stood an whole 3 paws taller. Isis was lofty and slender, her balance revered among the tribe. Kayara on the other hand was sleek and athletic beating even the best male in races and hunting.
“Fine, but don’t blame me when Akam’s men find us.” Kayara shouted, anger rose in her throat blossoming into the deep fierce growl that Isis had heard all too often. Isis soothed the cubs as Kayara; slashed at the heavy plants cutting them into fine ribbons. Kayara and Isis were sent to escort princess Tup-Tin, Princess Athena and princess Amneris to the shelter the rebel panthers had set up. Queen Nehedka the cubs mother was waiting their. Most likely licking her wounds and waiting for her babies. Which currently where covered in heavy mud and treading on their own tails.
“Kayara tell me about the palace, please.” princess Tup-Tin begged as she tripped and fell under Kayaras pacing paws. “Not now!" She growled, untangling her self from the tinny ball of black fur. “Are we all rested up now?” She asked.
Without waiting for an answer she hurried the on. “You lived in the palace right?” Amneris asked the oldest. “With the Queen, Isis and Radames right?” Amneris pestered Kayara. “Yes now please be quiet okay.” Kayara muttered. “Why. Why do we have to be quiet? Why do we have to leave home? Why, Why, Why? Tup-Tin yelled, trying to imitate Kayara’s booming roar yet falling short and producing something vaguely like a chirp and a squeal.
“You really want to know why?” Kayara rallied and angry from all the rain roared, her growl resonating from every tree within a mile.
“Yes” Tup-Tin cried her voice squeaking.
“Fine, we have to leave home because king Akam men think they are the better because they have wings. We have to be quiet because we don’t want to get caught. They want to destroy your family! Get it? Kill you! Murder your mother and skin your sisters. They believe they are the angels of death! With their wings they believe they are chosen to rule the forest!”
“Kayara calm down,” Isis commanded. Her normal, calm, mother tone sharp and angry it cracked threw the air like a whip and left Kayara stinging. “Your scaring the cubs!”
Kayara pride still aching was silent.
That’s when a loud snap could be heard.
“Shhhh” Kayara breathed, her muscled body tensing, coiling like a spring. A few seconds passed but in the jungle it felt like 5 eternities. Then a terrible crashing could be heard. The thrashing a thumping of wild green plants being torn and trampled on and a deep roar erupted from behind Kayara. She spun and leaped in to the thick under bush her claws flying and hacking eager too get into the fray. Tup-Tin pressed closer to her sisters as cubs leaned closer to Isis hugging close for the reassurance that the adult Panther provided. “Come” She ordered amusement playing into her whisper.
Kayara blinded by adrenalin tore throw the dense jungle foliage. Anything in her way became nothing more than slivers as she carved her way toward the danger. And there standing silhouetted in the now pouring rain a familiar figure. So frustrated in her mission and lack of action Kayara couldn’t, wouldn’t see who it was.
“Kayara!” He called but she was almost on him already. Flipping around he met her attack with one of his own. And very quickly it turned ugly.
“Radames” Kayara screamed her delight mixed with anger.
“Kayara” Radames his claws dangerously close to Kayara’s neck took a slash at her side instead of the fatal swipe designed for her only.
“Your getting slow” he remarked, as she twisted and flew at him.
“No I wouldn’t say that” She laughed her anger dissolving as she trapped him underneath her paws and lowered her mouth to his neck and nipped him.
“oh get off” he chided quietly
“You scared us….” Kayara, rolled to the side allowing him to get up.
“I could hear you guys arguing a mile away. What were you arguing about anyway?” He asked.
“Nothing” Kayara’s lips closed in a tight line. “Come on Isis and the brats are probably waiting for us… Race you.!” She called, no sooner than the next rain drop falling to earth the two friends where gone. Racing like the wild wind two slivers of midnight darting in and out of the trees.
